Dermot Morgan (31 March 1952 – 28 February 1998) was an Irish comedian and actor, best known for playing the character of Father Ted Crilly in the Channel 4 sitcom, Father Ted.
Before his acting career, Morgan was a teacher at St. Michael's College in Dublin and later worked as a graphic designer and advertising copywriter. His comedy career began with radio shows and then moved to television with satirical sketches and character work. He initially gained popularity in Ireland with his characters like Father Trendy, a parody of a priest trying to be modern.
His most famous role was in Father Ted, which ran for three series. The show was highly successful, winning several BAFTA awards. Morgan's portrayal of Father Ted was critically acclaimed.
Tragically, Dermot Morgan died of a heart attack on 28 February 1998, just a day after filming the final episode of Father Ted's third series. His sudden death shocked the comedy world, and he is remembered as one of Ireland's greatest comedic talents.
